Why Is Soil Salinity Important?

This lab exercise aims to determine the salinity of soil samples using electrical conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solids (TDS). Soil salinity is detrimental to plant health, as excessive salt concentration in the soil can disrupt nutrient uptake, damage plants, and hinder water movement. In addition, salinity can result from urban development, such as deicing salts and pollution dissolved in rainwater. The lab exercise involves mixing soil samples with deionized water, leaving them to dissolve for 10–30 min, and then measuring EC and TDS using a salt meter. The EC measurement detects the amount of salts in the soil, and the greater the number of anions or cations, the greater the electrical conductivity reading. The results are then used to identify the salinity class and predict the corresponding microbial and plant response. The lab exercise provides a simple method to determine soil salinity, allowing for better soil management to support healthy plant growth.
