What Is Soil pH? How Is It Measured?

Soil pH is a measure of acidity or alkalinity, which affects ion solubility, microbial activity, and plant growth. In this lab, exercises are designed to measure the pH of soil samples collected in the areas of interest. The first exercise involves a simple test using vinegar and baking soda to determine soil pH, while the second exercise uses pH kits. The third exercise involves calibrating a pH meter and measuring soil pH using slurry. Results can be used to identify the soil pH class and associated soil conditions for crop growth. pH values between 6 and 7.4 are optimum for general crop growth, but some crops require special pH conditions.
