Plankton, Mussels with French Fries, and Diarrhea
摘要
Mussels, a gastronomic delight, play a crucial role in filtering plankton from seawater, clearing up to 200 liters per day. However, some phytoplankton groups are toxic, posing risks when concentrated by filter-feeders like mussels. “Red tides,” or harmful algal blooms (HABs), are accumulations of toxic algae that can adversely affect ecosystems and organisms. HABs occur due to various factors, including physical accumulation, species growth, and nutrient release, with human activities contributing to their increase. Global warming, marinas, and nutrient release contribute to HABs. Toxic algae and their toxins can cause mass deaths, affect marine life, and even pose health risks to humans. Monitoring programs, conducted by experts examining water samples, help detect potential HABs near aquaculture facilities, emphasizing the considerable risks associated with toxic algae proliferation.
