A Brief History of Plankton Discovery

The study of plankton, both multicellular and unicellular, has a rich history dating back to Aristotle, with visual documentation beginning in the sixteenth century. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek’s work on protists laid the foundation for understanding unicellular plankton. Research on plankton’s role in the oceans gained momentum in the nineteenth century, culminating in the Challenger expedition (1872–1876) and Victor Hensen’s coining of the term “plankton.” The twentieth century saw advancements in understanding plankton distribution, vertical migration, primary production, and the microbial loop. Despite progress, much remains unknown, emphasizing the ongoing exploration of the intricate world of plankton.
