Sampling Plankton

  • Albert Calbet

摘要

Plankton, ranging from viruses to large jellyfish, require specific sampling methods based on size. For microscopic unicellular plankton, we use hydrographic bottles, suction pumps, and nets like Niskin. Larger zooplankton demand fishing-like methods with varying mesh-sized nets. Delicate gelatinous plankton may require manual extraction. Preserving samples involves chemical reagents or freezing. Their analysis requires stereoscopic magnifiers, microscopes, or specialized machines like flow cytometers. Emerging biochemical and molecular techniques offer insights into diversity, but accurately quantifying abundance remains challenging.
