Plastic: You Are Plankton and To Plankton You Shall Return

  • Albert Calbet

摘要

Plastic, originating from diverse sources and chemical compositions, often synthetic and traced back to petroleum products formed from ancient plankton, poses a significant environmental challenge due to widespread misuse and single-use practices. The slow degradation of plastics, some breaking into microplastics, exacerbates the issue in marine environments. These tiny particles, entering the marine food web, particularly affect plankton and fish. While current concentrations are relatively low, the massive annual influx of plastic into the sea underscores the potential threat. Although ingested plastic particles commonly pass through organisms harmlessly, certain components can be toxic. The broader impact of microplastics on marine life necessitates further research, emphasizing responsible plastic practices, including use, reuse, proper disposal, and recycling, to curb plastic waste in our seas.
