The Fragility of Plankton

Disasters like oil spills often draw attention to the visible impacts on seabirds, turtles, and dolphins, but the critical foundation of the marine food web, plankton, remains overlooked. Plankton’s sensitivity to pollutants is evident. Anthropogenic activities, such as introducing foreign oyster species for aquaculture, can disrupt planktonic diversity and upset marine ecosystem balance. Pollutants, including hydrocarbons and heavy metals, affect plankton, with emerging pollutants like nanoparticles, plasticizers, and hormones, among others, posing additional threats. Understanding and addressing these issues are crucial as plankton’s resilience is essential for the overall health of marine ecosystems.
