Planktonic organisms exhibit remarkable adaptability and resilience in aquatic environments, thriving in extreme conditions that challenge conventional life limits. From the scalding depths of hydrothermal vents to the icy polar waters, plankton have evolved ingenious strategies for survival. In hydrothermal vent ecosystems, plankton utilize chemosynthesis, specialized enzymes, and heat-resistant proteins to endure extreme temperatures and pressures. Polar diatoms, such as those producing antifreeze proteins, showcase adaptations for life in freezing waters. Deep-sea plankton, like copepods, demonstrate flexible cell membranes and buoyancy mechanisms to navigate crushing pressures. Plankton at the water’s surface cope with intense solar radiation through pigments and vertical migration. In oxygen-depleted zones, diverse adaptations, including alternative metabolic pathways and behavioral strategies, allow plankton to thrive. Studying these extreme adaptations not only expands our understanding of habitability on Earth but also holds promise for industrial and biotechnological applications.
