Establishing Code Theory: Towards a Sociology of Language

This chapter deals principally with Bernstein’s “sociolinguistic thesis.” It introduces the key concepts of restricted codes and elaborated codes, addresses criticisms of Bernstein as a deficit theorist that developed around them, and reviews a selection of studies that have employed them.
