How to Transition from Academia to Biotech (a Personal Perspective)

In this chapter a set of basic steps for academics to go about applying for their first industry job are outlined and explained. The steps are based on the success of the author in gaining job offers in the Biotech industry after 1 year as an academic Neuroscience postdoc. A realistic range of compensation in industry is also discussed (based on 2023 US dollars). In summary, the steps outlined include: adapt your academic CV into an industry resume, completely fill out your LinkedIn profile, and engage with recruiters via LinkedIn or elsewhere. Then, reach out on social media to build connections and find referrals, reach out to any personal connections in your vicinity for more referrals, and apply to at least 100–200 jobs with or without referrals. And finally, plan on a very long-term approach, sustained for at least 6–12 months, being ready to act quickly when you get an interview, especially with an offer.
