The History of the IOL Power Club: 2005–2025

The IOL Power Club began at the 2024 ASCRS meeting because of an accidental meeting of 4 IOL power formula autthors (Aramberri, Haigis, Hoffer & Olsen). This led to them getting together, along with inviting 2 others (Norrby & Shammas), for a meeting to discuss the subject and socialize for 3 days in San Sebastian, Spain in September of 2005. It was so successful, they decided to form a Club and have meetings on an annual basis alternating between the EU and US. Over the years, others, with similar interests were invited to make presentations and some were later invited to join the Club. Early on, biometer and IOL manufacturers were asked to sponsor the meeting and send representatives to make scientific presentations. There were never product exhibits and commercialism was downplayed but, everyone was treated as equals. Over the ensuing 20 years, the IPC has continued these meetings darting around the EU and US and many subsequent endeavors have led to valuable contributions to this field, including this Open Access textbook dedicated to our Co-founder and colleague, Wolfgang Haigis PhD who is dearly missed since his passing in October 2019.
