Reservoir and Screening Properties of the Productive Series’ Sediments

The Productive Series succession comprises terrigenous sediments and rocks containing grains of a wide range from very coarse to very fine. A summary of the mineralogical composition and cementation of the Productive Series rocks is presented below. For instance, sandy-silty rocks comprise 20-50% of the PS succession. The Lower Kur trough consists of polymictic (quartzose-feldspathic-graywacke) varieties containing abundant rock fragments. The proportion gradually increases towards the Baku Archipelago and becomes predominant there. As a result, polymictic rocks appear to be turned into oligomictic feldspathic-quartzose rocks. The amount of quartz also increases in the Absheron peninsula and Absheron archipelago, where monomictic quartz-rich sandstones and siltstones have a large occurrence, particularly in the lower portion of the PS. The sorting of the PS sandstones varies from very well-sorted to poorly sorted varieties. Such heterogeneity of mineral distribution in the PS sediments is due to different provenance terrigenous material composing PS succession as well as post-sedimentary processes influencing the number of clay minerals such as montmorillonite, kaolinite, and chlorite in a matrix and cementing material that strongly affects reservoir quality.
