Perspective of Stakeholders: Understanding Viewpoints

The accessibility and affordability of medicines are a primary societal concern. On the same note, pharmaceutical drug pricing is a polarizing issue. Numerous stakeholders have diverse opinions on what pharmaceutical pricing should be like. Similarly, ideas abound in regards to improving access to medications. However, from the pharmaceutical industry’s perspective, developing novel drugs is a highly costly endeavor. Fortunately, an opportunity exists for a win-win scenario to be seized upon by proactively seeking out the perspectives of all stakeholders. After all, drug development is a complex team sport, and most of the time, a decision on any aspect of product development cannot be made without understanding its impact on other disciplines’ work. From this perspective, one cannot help but appreciate the various sciences working together to achieve a common goal: developing a safe and effective drug product. However, like all things in life, innovations in the field of pharmaceuticals cannot be evaluated in isolation. One must also understand the trials and tribulations of other areas where fundamental research is being conducted and solutions are being developed for humanity.
