Wharton Jelly MSC for Treating Local and Systemic Illnesses
摘要
Many medical conditions are recalcitrant to the currently available therapeutic regimens and stem cell therapy appears to be promising to narrow this gap. Among various stem cells, the safety and efficacy of adult multipotent mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) has been established in many preclinical, numerous early phase and some first advanced clinical trials. However, there are many different types of MSCs with disparate properties and characteristics. Lately, Wharton jelly (WJ)-derived MSCs (WJ-MSCs) are often considered as “gold standard” For treatment in many conditions. We here describe the many favorable attributes of WJ-MSCs that make them particularly well positioned for effective and feasible clinical translation. Additionally, we describe the mechanism of action responsible for their effects along with the preferred routes of administration. Furthermore, the safety of these cells in clinical use and future directions will be discussed along with the importance of minimizing population doubling (PD) and performing cryopreservation recovery to optimize clinical outcomes.
