Freedom, Solidarity, and Subsidiarity Through Work in Ancient Rome: The Tomb of the Baker Marcus Vergilius Eurysaces

Solidarity and subsidiarity are central principles of the social teaching of the Catholic Church. Every intent to identify them within the framework of the ancient world must be conscious of its limitations. On the other hand, these principles are united to the very nature of every form of social life, and so we can discover their traces also a long time before popes and bishops enunciated them in official documents of the Church.
