Play, Code, Learn: Fostering Computational Thinking in Primary Aged Learners Through Interactive Play

摘要

With computer science becoming a compulsory area of curriculum across the world, experts agree on the importance of developing understanding of computational thinking from a young age. Research on augmented reality in education is also gaining momentum and has demonstrated many benefits including positive effects on students’ learning outcomes and motivation. ByteEd’s Play Code Learn series of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) kits utilise a new approach of teaching computer science with an unplugged-to-digital methodology alongside innovative augmented reality technologies. A study has been conducted to examine the impact of the first Play Code Learn kit—Dinosaur Steps—in New Zealand classrooms. The unplugged approach has proven to be advantageous to learners and highlights a significant shift in knowledge retention and understanding of computer science concepts, skills, and literacy after engaging with the kit. Moreover, the use of play-based methodology increased motivation for learning.
