Mumps-like Salivary Gland Swellings

There is a group of abnormal salivary gland swellings (pneumoparotid, anesthesia mumps, iodide mumps) that to some extent have similarities to the signs and symptoms of mumps. The liberty of classifying them into one category, for want of a better option, has been taken. Sudden onset of unilateral or bilateral salivary gland swellings function as their hallmark. As with mumps, the parotid gland is usually involved unilaterally or bilaterally, but submandibular gland swellings can also occur. The group’s limited similarity to mumps is also derived from the fact that treatment is essentially palliative because spontaneous resolution can be anticipated. However a significant difference from mumps symptomatology is that pain is not a significant factor.
