Towards Sustainable Mining Operations: Optimizing Thermal and Environmental Conditions for Underground Workers Using CFD Analysis

The work carried out to extract minerals in underground mines represents an activity that must be highly controlled to ensure adequate safety conditions for workers. One of the most important aspects to consider is the environmental conditions since the assurance of temperature and humidity values within the acceptable ranges for work is vital for developing the activities. Accordingly, providing the environment with a ventilation system that allows the parameters to be controlled to achieve the appropriate conditions is necessary. In this research, the study of adequate time to ventilate an underground mine development work was carried out, taking as a parameter the temperature and humidity present in it and the effect of this system in the reduction of said parameters; to achieve this objective, the calculations of the work dimensions, equipment to be used and required air flows were made according to current regulations. After that, a simulation was carried out using the CFD FLUENT software to determine the time necessary for the best thermo-environmental conditions according to the standards.
