Imagining the Functional Model of European Security

  • Kamil Zwolski

摘要

Every field of study is based on rarely disputed assumptions. In European Studies, the territorial form, which integration in Europe has taken, constitutes a core assumption underpinning the field of study concerned with European integration. This chapter challenges that assumption and instead asks what would have happened if international integration in Europe unveiled along the lines of the functional blueprint à la David Mitrany. Specifically, the chapter revisits the security order in central and eastern Europe in the early post-Cold War period in order to assess the potential effect of our counterfactual scenario on that order.
