摘要

The global demand for hydrogen shall surpass 200 Mt by 2030, as the US International Energy Agency reported. Hydrogen obtained from renewable sources, or biohydrogen, is one of the most promising energy sources that can avoid fossil CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. However, there are still important technological challenges to be overcome before biohydrogen reaches a considerable scale in the world energy matrix. This chapter presents an overview of biohydrogen technologies and a technological landscape of biohydrogen production and purification outlined from patent documents. A patent search allowed the identification of the major players, technology segments, and technological trends related to pure microorganisms and microbial consortia, fermentation processes, and bioreactor models. This information provides the panorama and perspectives for this emerging green alternative in the developing bioeconomy.
