Virtual Manufacturing: 3D Simulation of Shipbuilding Processes Based on a Game Engine

This research explores the application of game engines and discrete-event simulation (DES) in the context of virtual manufacturing processes, specifically focusing on shipbuilding. The study demonstrates the potential of game engines as open-source platforms for developing simulators that accurately replicate the operational dynamics of manufacturing systems. By utilizing the Unity game engine and a DES library, a 3D simulator of shipbuilding processes is created, offering realistic visualizations, configurable scenes, and efficient debugging capabilities. The simulation encompasses various stages of the ship construction process, providing insights into subblock assembly, outfitting workshops, painting, block outfitting, and block erection. The simulator allows for the analysis of key metrics such as occupation rate, production rate, and average processing time for each manufacturing cell and block. The research underscores the importance of leveraging innovative technologies to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of digital manufacturing in shipbuilding and other industries.
