Supplier Development Case COTECMAR: Lessons Learned for the Shipbuilding Sector

Shipbuilding is a global and highly competitive industry that operates through complex supply chains. This article focuses on the systemic factors that generate uncertainty in the shipbuilding sector’s supply chains, using case studies of top-tier suppliers. The importance of a well-managed supply chain is emphasized as a sustainable resource to enhance opportunities for companies and the overall industrial sector. The experiences of other top countries in the ship-building industry, such as South Korea, China, and Singapore, are also examined. The role of China as a global economic driver and Singapore’s focus on specialized technology and innovation are analyzed. Additionally, the case of Cotecmar in Colombia is presented, where a supplier development program was implemented to strengthen the naval supply chain and promote innovation in the sector. This study highlights the significance of supply chain management in shipbuilding and demonstrates the need to establish strong relationships with specialized suppliers to ensure a steady supply of components, materials, and services necessary for efficient ship production.
