The weighty problems of the world demand no less than our profound love. Friedrich Nietzsche observed that a thinker’s relationship to their problems greatly influences the outcome of their thoughts. If we engage them impersonally, with the cold touch of detached reasoning, they yield no fruit. Yet when we dare to become personally invested, making our very “fate, needs, and highest happiness” contingent on grappling with these problems, that’s when we become responsible and when meaningful insights arise.
