Climate Change and Cyclones: Its Associated Consequences in Tamil Nadu Coastal Cities of Chennai and Thoothukudi

Climate change is an inevitable phenomenon due to modernization and urbanization across the globe and poses big challenges. The coasts of Tamil Nadu are frequently affected by the Northeast Monsoon in every year. The study was investigated based on the historical evidences which are based upon the climate and cyclone. In addition, the study investigated quantitative appraisal of impacts of climate change in Tamil Nadu coastal regions. The cyclone data set is acquired from the IMD E-Atlas and climatic data is adopted from the NASA Power data access website. The study has examined the Tamil Nadu coastal cities, namely Chennai and Thoothukudi. The study was documented eleven cyclones have crossed through the Tamil Nadu coast. The climatic data was adopted from 2006 to 2020, which included parameters such as temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, and wind speed. The results revealed that a highest average temperature of 29.3 °C was documented in Chennai during the study period and a lowest temperature of the study area 28.7 °C in Thoothukudi, and most of the coastal districts had fluctuating temperatures from 2006 to 2020. Therefore, the study suggests taking special care of Tamil Nadu coastal cities, namely Chennai and Thoothukudi, for protect from the climate change based natural calamities for better management.
