Conclusion: Impacts on the Science of Writing, the Science of Reading, and Beyond

This chapter concludes this volume by briefly summarizing the entire book and identifying the broader impacts of this book. It first explains Hangul’s resilient compatibility with technology, unlike the Chinese and Japanese writing systems. It then unpacks the great potential for Hangul to coalesce into arts and aesthetics. Hangul has been creatively used in artwork (e.g., calligraphies and paintings), commercial displays, book covers, book spines, and so on due to the flexibility of both horizontal and vertical writing. These attempts should continue and grow into digital platforms. The implications of Hangul for the science of writing (grapholinguistics) and the science of reading (psycholinguistics) are identified from graphemic, theoretical, pedagogical, and practical aspects. It finally identifies a series of research areas for future studies in Hangul.
