Smart Contract Vulnerabilities: Exploring the Technical and Economic Aspects

Amidst the dynamic landscape of blockchain technology, smart contracts have emerged as a groundbreaking solution for automating digital agreements. This chapter delves deeply into the pivotal convergence of technical intricacies and economic significance that envelop smart contracts. Our study meticulously examines vulnerabilities intrinsic to smart contracts, unveiling potential risks within the blockchain ecosystem. Furthermore, this chapter delves into real-world applications spanning diverse sectors and meticulously dissects the limitations and challenges encountered within each domain. Our research reveals a range of vulnerabilities, notably exposed in the recently compiled tables. These vulnerabilities encompass re-entrancy (Dingman et al. Int J Netw Distrib Comput 7:121–132, 2019), which exposes unauthorized access and fund manipulation. Additionally, the dangers posed by integer overflow/underflow, unauthorized access, and denial of service attacks (Kemmoe et al. IEEE Access 8:117782–117801, 2020) are outlined. Timestamp dependency and unchecked external calls emerge as potential weak points, while front-running and insecure coding practices underscore substantial threats to contract integrity. Beyond vulnerabilities, our analysis delves into practical implementations of smart contracts across industries such as food, real estate, insurance, identity management, gaming, energy, healthcare, shipping, voting, and government applications. While showcasing the potential for process enhancement and efficiency, each sector also underscores distinct limitations and challenges that must be addressed for seamless integration. By critically examining vulnerabilities and pragmatic limitations, this chapter fosters an understanding of both the potential and boundaries of smart contracts. It accentuates the necessity for balanced innovation and pragmatic execution, navigating challenges, standardizing protocols, and negotiating regulatory landscapes. This exploration contributes to a comprehensive comprehension of smart contracts’ transformative potential across industries, guiding the way towards secure, efficient, and adaptable contractual relationships.
