Intelligence and Covert Operations

This chapter examines British intelligence assistance to Oman during the Dhofar War, with reference not only to the counter-insurgency campaign but also monitoring the potential threat of PDRY intervention. It also covers the contentious question of detainee interrogation, with reference to the handling of insurgent suspects and the assistance British Army Intelligence Corps personnel provided to the Sultan’s security forces. The chapter also summarises what historians now know about covert action in this conflict, with particular reference to the cross-border raids into South Yemen conducted by Mahri exiles trained by the SAS.
