Coalition Warfare and the International Dimension

This chapter analyses the international dimension of the Dhofar War, covering external assistance to both the insurgency and the Sultanate of Oman. It also outlines the frictions that existed between the UK and the government of Qaboos over the conduct of the war, with specific reference to British fears of escalation with the PFLOAG’s main patron, the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY, also known as South Yemen). The chapter also covers Jordanian and Iranian military intervention on Oman’s behalf, and the factors which led both King Hussein and Shah Reza Pahlavi to send troops to fight in Dhofar.
