Nerve-Sparing Robot-Assisted Prostatectomy Using the Neurovascular Structure-Adjacent Frozen Section Examination (NeuroSAFE) Technique

Performing nerve sparing (NS) surgery is essential to achieving favorable functional outcome in radical prostatectomy (RP). The NeuroSAFE technique using frozen section allows for preservation of the neurovascular bundle tailored to the true extent of the disease and leads to a higher rate of NS without impairment of the oncological outcome. Multiple institutions successfully confirmed the safety, reproducibility, and the excellent histopathological concordance of the technique. Thus, the NeuroSAFE technique is the only gold standard for real-time resection margin assessment during both open and da Vinci robot-assisted NS RP, and improves the postoperative potency and urinary control of patients without oncological risk.
