Trans- and Extraperitoneal Approach for Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy

The number of robotic-assisted radical prostatectomies has increased tremendously in recent years. In many institutions robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy has become the standard of care. In the United States more than 85% of radical prostatectomies are performed by a robotic system (Leow et al., Eur Urol 70(5), 837–845, 2016; Garg et al., Prostate Int 9(3), 157–162, 2021). Advances of the console, the surgical arm cart have made robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy a standardized procedure all over the world (Su, Curr Opin Urol 20(2), 130–135, 2010). Its advantages over conventional laparoscopy, such as seven degrees of freedom, dexterity enhancement, stereovision and tremor filtering result in a steeper learning curve for surgeons in comparison to conventional laparoscopy and for open surgeons allows easier adoption of minimal invasive techniques (Grivas et al., World J Urol 40(4), 929–949, 2022).
