Anesthesiological Considerations During Robotic Urologic Surgery

Robotic-assisted surgery in urology has gained popularity for its benefits but presents challenges for anesthesiologists. Preoperative assessment is crucial, focusing on patients with cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, neurological, ocular, or metabolic comorbidities, and special considerations for obesity, diabetes, and peripheral neuropathy. Intraoperatively, careful placement of lines, monitors, and endotracheal tubes is essential within the limited space constraints. Adequate muscle relaxation, airway protection, and patient positioning are critical. Nerve injuries due to prolonged positions require secure placement. It is important that the anesthesia staff and surgical staff communicate to best prepare for the needs of the patient, including special body positioning during the procedure. Anesthesiologists play a vital role in patient selection, managing intraoperative complexities, and ensuring safe postoperative care in robotic-assisted urologic surgery.
