MecLung—A Respiratory System Mechanical Simulator

MecLung is a mechanical simulator. It consists of a metal cylinder provided with a tight piston controlled by a motor and programmed to simulate resistances and compliances of the human respiratory system. Additionally, the simulator presents spontaneous activity resembling respiratory muscular drive. Resistances and compliances in the range of 5 to 50 hPa/l/s and 10 to 50 ml/hPa, respectively, covering the clauses of the ABNT ISO 80601-2-12 to test the performance of mechanical ventilators for adults, were tested. The airways pressure, flow rate and volume waveforms are available for the user through digital data at 200 Hz sampling frequency. The motion equation applied to the data recovers the mechanical impedances with an accuracy of 2% for pressure and volume-controlled mechanical ventilation.
