Electromyography Associated with Biofeedback in Rehabilitation Therapy in Stroke-Stricken Individuals: An Integrative Review

The electromyographic signal is characterized as the recording of the muscular activity generated by the depolarization of the external membrane of the muscle fiber. Thus, the acquisition of the action potentials of a motor unit can be performed using intramuscular or surface electrodes, each model presenting advantages and disadvantages. Electromyographic activity can be associated with biofeedback, using instrumentation to record the physiological responses of organisms and then, provide information back to the individual. This work presents a study of articles on EMG associated with biofeedback in rehabilitation engineering. An integrative review was realized with PICO methodology, for the elaboration of the research question. The research was done in the portals Pubmed, Dimensions, Embase and Scopus, and some of keywords were Adult, Nervous System Diseases, Electromyography and Biofeedback. As a result, 73 articles were obtained, and only 8 were used, which were in accordance with the desired focus. Comparisons were made between the studies, through the elaboration of tables to assist in the presentation of results. In general, the majority of the results proved the efficacy of treatment using electromyography associated with biofeedback in the recovery of patients after stroke. The question asked by the PICO methodology was: the electromyography associated with biofeedback in rehabilitation therapy in adults who present neurological diseases help increase muscle strength and functional recovery? At the end of the study, it was possible to answer the question positively, since the results demonstrate the efficacy in the treatment using the electromyography associated with biofeedback.
