Microphysicaltherapy as a Novel Adjunctive Nonpharmacological Treatment for Refractory Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: A Prospective Observational Study

The microphysiotherapy is a manual technique that treats by small movements, stimulates the selfregulation of the organism. Epilepsy is a clinical condition produced by a sudden, abnormal and disordered electrical discharge, the treatment is drug. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease variable airflow limitation. The main objective of this research was to perform the microphysiotherapy technique in patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy and to verify it as a nonpharmacological treatment. A participant with temporal lobe epilepsy, received five sessions of microphysiotherapy, which in resulted (after sessions) a reduced average number of seizures (from ten seizures to three seizures a month). A questionnaire regarding the quality of life (QOLIE-31) was applied, which showed an increase in score from 99 to 104 after sessions, improving the quality of life. The other anxiety and depression questionnaire (HAD), which resulted in a decrease in the anxiety score from nine, to seven without anxiety and for depression, from ten to six without depression. As a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic, it was not possible to carry out the research with a sample size of 60 participants, therefore making it a candidate for another research. Considering that epilepsy is a health problem and the STATE has a large number of people with a need to be medicated for that, we can consider the microphysiotherapy technique as another benefit that can help and enhance the treatment of epilepsy, improving the quality of life of these patients, of asthma patients and participants without medical conditions.
