Physical Space

  • Sofia Malamatidou

摘要

This chapter presents the analysis of how physical space is described in non-translated tourism texts to reveal any cross-linguistic differences in the use of adjectives used to modify nouns referring to physical space. The focus is on specific semantic categories of adjectives which are most prominent in tourism discourse, their overall distribution, and how they are realised through specific linguistic choices, i.e. specific adjectives. The examination of these categories reveals how each society, namely American, British, French, Greek, and Russian, gazes at the world around it, how it organises physical space, and which aspects of it are prioritised and promoted in the context of tourism discourse.
