Running with the Bulls: The Validated Concerns of Black Women Coaches’ Workplace Bullying Experiences (2022)
摘要
An understudied topic in higher education is Black women coaches in intercollegiate athletics. Black women face an intersectional problem of being a racial minority and a woman in the white male-dominated area of college athletics. Therefore, I designed this instrument to query Black women coaches from Division I and Division II athletics to learn if they face workplace bullying and how such experiences may affect their career trajectory. Primarily, Black women coach women’s basketball, women’s track and field, and volleyball. In addition to the quantitative aspect of the chapter, the open-ended comments resulted in qualitative data that gave a more complete picture of Black women coaches’ experiences. Using Pratto et al.’s [Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, 31(3), 369–409 (2000)] social dominance theory, I analyzed the sample of n = 106. The Cronbach’s Alpha process is presented step-by-step. The chapter continues with the dissemination procedures and the findings, inclusive of the qualitative themes developed from the open-ended questions. Then the actual instrument is presented. This instrument provides another example of how the data from open-ended questions produce qualitative themes which support the quantitative data. The chapter concludes by describing the solo-authored book and conference presentations.
