Family Structure, Adolescent Identities, and the Crisis (Dilemma) of Transition into Early Adulthood in Kenya

Adolescence as a critical developmental stage marks the transition from childhood to early adulthood, encompassing a range of changes in emotional, biological, psychosocial, and cognitive domains. This transition is profoundly influenced by familial roles and societal factors. This book chapter reviews empirical research and government reports to analyze the social problems associated with adolescents’ transition into early adulthood in Kenya from an ecological perspective. It explores issues such as teenage sexuality and pregnancies, drug and substance abuse, and juvenile delinquency. Additionally, it explores how family structure and identity shape these outcomes. Guided by Greenfield’s theory of social change and human development, the chapter highlights the shifting dynamics of this transition and its impact on cultural values and social environments. It also underscores the pivotal role of family support in aiding adolescents during this crucial phase. Evidently, family structure has traditionally played a vital role in adolescent development. However, the chapter acknowledges the evolving influence of peers and mass media, with adolescents seeking self-identity and recognition in a rapidly changing modern society. This chapter offers a preview into the multifaceted challenges and opportunities that adolescents encounter as they navigate the complex journey from adolescence to early adulthood in the Kenyan context.
