Limitations of Aligner Applications

This chapter aims to highlight the limitations that clear aligners can pose in orthodontics. Since the launch and commercialisation of Invisalign® together with the increase in popularity of this technique, awareness of the limitations need to be exposed for the benefit of both patients and treating clinicians alike. Aesthetically, conventional fixed appliances will always be surpassed by clear aligners; however, the latter remain deficient in certain aspects of treatment when compared to the former. To date, fixed appliance systems are still considered the gold standard in treatment efficacy and accuracy of tooth movement. Sub-optimal aligner performance is mainly due to the inherent properties of the aligner materials. This chapter will also aim to provide a deep insight into this.
