摘要

In the face of a generally stigmatising and negative approach towards the theme of men and masculinities in Africa, this chapter seeks to shift the conversation to a more positive and liberating terrain. It provides the ideological and theoretical foundation for the volume by underscoring the important role of African male scholars engaging in research and publication on men and masculinities in Africa. In particular, the chapter outlines the historical context that has given rise to the discourse on men and masculinities in Africa. It highlights the global trends, identifies the major themes and examines how these have been appropriated or elaborated on in Africa. The chapter then summarises the key themes in the parts and the chapters that constitute the Handbook.
