Introduction

This first chapter provides the theoretical background that guided the development of the P-I-E Model. The three factors of the P-I-E Model are discussed: Personalized, Inclusive, Engagement, in addition to the nine elements: Student, Teacher, Community, Inclusion and Differentiation, Instructional Design, Evaluation and Feedback, User Interface, Communication, and Schedule. The five ways to use the P-I-E Model are presented: Design a new online course, Design a research project that examines online learning effectiveness, Redevelop part or all of an existing online course, Evaluate an existing online course, and Collaborate on resources for online learning. An implementation plan is presented with the following steps: Step 1. Creating personalized learning by identifying and aligning needs and recognizing opportunities for personalization. Step 2. Creating inclusive learning by mapping program goals and objectives and aligning methods of instruction and assessments. Step 3. Creating engaging learning by user interface design and determining the structure of the environment. Step 4. Creating sustainable success through course evaluation and course adjustments.
