Occurrence of Arsenic in Groundwater Resources of Majuli River Island in Brahmaputra River Basin

Quality is of equal importance to quantity when we talk of water resource evaluation (Kumar et al., Chemosphere 205:493–505, 2018; Kumar et al., Sci. Rep. 9:1–16, 2019). In recent times, arsenicArsenic (As) in groundwater has been reported from various provinces in India (Singh et al., Hum. Ecol. Risk Assess. Int. J. 27:1588–1612, 2021). These areas mostly belong to vast riverine tracts of the BrahmaputraBrahmaputra and Ganga River Basin. Majuli is one of the largest inhabited river islands of the world in the BrahmaputraBrahmaputra River Basin. This Island exists in the middle part of the BrahmaputraBrahmaputra basin. The area is bounded by latitudes 26°32′ and 27°10′ N and longitudes 93°30′ and 94°35′ E. Mighty Brahmaputra River and its tributary, the Subansiri River surrounds this island on three sides. The Kherkutia Suti, distributaries of the Brahmaputra River bound this island from the fourth side. Every year with the onset of the monsoonMonsoon river flow begins to rise and most of the islands are submerged. River then flows in more or less a single channel. With a network of interlacing channels, this BrahmaputraBrahmaputra River is a classic example of a braided river. Within the bank line deep channel, the continuous shift from one location to another is the most striking feature of this mighty River.
