Ice-Cover Monitoring

It is important to monitor ice cover characteristics such as ice type, ice thickness and the amount of snow on the ice cover throughout the winter season. Such information is useful when making predictions concerning ice-cover breakup and ice-jamming potential at the end of the winter season. This chapter discusses some tools that are available for monitoring ice covers, followed by sections with simple exercises that can be utilised to make predictions of ice thicknesses.
