The Total Phenols and Total Flavonoids Content of Petioles Sweet Cherry (Prunus Avium L.)

The petioles of cherries, sweet and sour, are potent antioxidants and anti-radicals that exhibit high cytotoxicity against a variety of tumor cell lines, according to research. With an aim to provide a small contribution to the research of cherry petioles, the total phenol and total flavonoid contents were examined in this study. Using different extraction methods and solvents, ex tracts of dry petioles sweet cherry were prepared. Following that, the total phenol and total flavonoid contents were determined using spectrophotometric techniques. The maceration method and the Soxhlet method were used to obtain methanolic and ethanolic extracts of dry sweet cherry petioles. The aim of using two different types of extractions is to obtain information about the extractive potential of different methods, the impact of different solvents, and the extraction conditions. The mass fraction of the extract obtained by the maceration method (205.22 mg/g) is higher than the extract obtained by the Soxhlet method (94.34 mg/g), confirming that it is a more effective extraction method. The extracts obtained by the maceration method also contain more total phenols (24.9 mg GA/gdw) and total flavonoids (13.3 RU/gdw) than the extracts obtained by the Soxhlet method (18.5 mgGA/gdw; 11.0mgRU/gdw). Possible reasons for a more effective maceration extraction, in this study, can be the duration of the extraction, the temperature at which the extraction took place, and the type of solvent used. These reasons should be studied in more detail when choosing the ideal method and optimizing the extraction conditions.
