摘要

Nowadays, acne is one of the most common skin conditions worldwide. Conventional treatment consists of the application of topical medication in milder forms, following the oral administration of antimicrobial drugs, hormonal therapy, and vitamin A derivative—isotretinoin in more severe forms of acne. Compared to other therapeutic solutions and despite side effects it has proven its benefits in the treatment of acne. This study aimed to investigate the success rate, types, and dosage forms of isotretinoin used for the treatment of acne as well as the occurrence, frequency, and severity of isotretinoin’s side effects. An anonymous questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 500 responders of different gender, ages, and ethnicity to determine the success of acne treatment using different doses and the different duration of the treatment itself. Also, the success of isotretinoin therapy and the first-line therapy was compared, as well as the safety profile. Obtained results have shown that isotretinoin is extremely effective in the treatment of acne, with 91.2% of positive outcomes. For the majority of patients, a 6-month long cycle of treatment which included a dosage application of 40 mg of isotretinoin was sufficient for the expected therapeutical outcome. Furthermore, mild or moderate side effects were recorded in 77% of patients while 10% of patients terminated the application of isotretinoin due to the severity of side effects. Considering the side effects and the effectiveness of isotretinoin, and comparing it with other approaches, we conclude that the use of isotretinoin is justified in the treatment of acne.
