Removal of Disinfection By-Products by Physico-Chemical Treatment Methods

The presence of disinfection by-products (DBPs), such as trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acid (HAA) and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), in treated drinking water needs to be paid attention. Its prevention and removal are critical for wastewater recycling. The treatment technology should be able to remove DBPs without compromising with the quality of final drinking water. There are various physico-chemical and biological methods to remove DBPs from drinking water. This chapter represents detailed aspects of conventional and emerging physical and chemical methods for the removal of DBPs from drinking water. It was found during the study that out of all the methods available, removal using granular activated carbon, air stripping and membrane filtration are found to be the most effective ones.
