Forced to Force? Remarks on the Architecture of the Left Periphery of Early Irish and Absolute/Conjunct Morphology

In light of recent work on the Old Irish left periphery, it appears that the Old Irish verb moves through Tense and lands in Force. This necessitates a rethinking of the synchronic conditioning environments for the absolute versus conjunct endings in simplex verbs. Our proposal, couched within the framework of Distributed Morphology, accounts for the distribution of the simplex endings straightforwardly. It effectively renders the original conditioning environments of the proposed Cowgill Particle into a synchronic form. Additionally, it shows that the Cowgill Particle has left a very specific morphophonological residue in the underlying forms of preverbs and particles.
