Truth, Meaning, and Attachment in Healing Combat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

At the age of 74, the author left his psychiatric practice in Charlottesville, Virginia, and moved to Fort Lee, Virginia, to serve the military who had suffered post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in overseas conflicts. Some of these Soldiers bear deep, invisible scars that even their loved ones have trouble understanding. Using case studies that have been proofread and approved for publication by the military and those involved, it is possible to gain insights into this disorder. Stories of three of these members of the military will demonstrate the importance of meaning and the spiritual dimension in their healing. Reflections on the author’s experiences with active-duty Soldiers and veterans with PTSD will be provided. Commentary follows each case, to point to logotherapeutic principles that were applicable.
