A New Beginning, Anew: Macedonian Sociology in a New Era (1990s–2020s)

  • Naum Trajanovski

摘要

The last of the chapters following the trajectory of Macedonian sociology discusses the sociological adjustments to the most recent sociopolitical developments in the state. As of 1991, the Republic of Macedonia entered a turbulent era of domestic and regional challenges to its independence and sovereignty. Among them, the institutionalization of the delicate interethnic equilibrium emerged as one of the major political themes, structuring the political process in the three post-Yugoslav decades. The interethnic tensions had a brief violent escalation in the 2001 armed struggle between the state security forces and ethnic Albanian radicals. I discuss this period by providing an intellectual panorama of the major sociological activities as of the early 1990s. I also focus on the series of exchanges about the state’s multiethnic prospects to present some of the dominant trajectories of producing and instrumentalizing sociological knowledge in post-Yugoslav Macedonia.
