The Voices of the Double-Periphery: The Crisis Years and the Inertia of Macedonian Sociology (1970s–1980s)

This chapter follows the development of Macedonian sociology during the 1970s and 1980s, tracing two major patterns. The first one pertained to the process of completion of the sociological institutionalization instigated in the 1960s. Against the backdrop of the downfall of sociology in the major Yugoslav academic centers in the early 1970s, the Macedonian sociologists faced a different domestic reception of their expertise in comparison to the late 1960s. As a response to the novel situation, they became engaged in a series of deliberations upon the roles of sociology and sociologists in the state and society going through a multifaceted and unsettling crisis. In several cases, constituting the second pattern, those reconsiderations resulted in initiatives aimed at demonstrating the autonomy of Macedonian sociology.
