Neuro-Inclusive Design Considerations for Assistive and Accessible Technologies and Beyond

The sensory accommodation framework for technology is a vision for technology design that encompasses a holistic view of autism from both a clinical and user centered approach. The reason to bring these two perspectives together is because both are equally important in terms of supporting the community which has largely been left out of consideration of the constructed world. As close to 20% of the population of the world is neurodivergent, considerations for how to design technologies for them and with them is needed. This book examines different layers of human processing that can be supported by technology. In this final chapter, the layers come together to accommodate a whole person. The chapter ends with steps to build support beyond the person to address societal stigma more broadly by introducing a new approach or paradigm, Celebratory Technology for Neurodiversity. This approach runs counter to the Neurodiversity Movement that strives to widen society’s academic and social expectations. The other paradigms that have emerged are accessible, inclusive, and critical design, yet none of these directly target the largest need: reducing social stigma.
